Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the most interesting substances in lubricants. A long, heavy, chain-shaped molecule accidentally discovered by Roy Plunkett at DuPont in 1938, while attempting to create a new refrigerant. It contains only two elements, carbon and fluorine, is inert (non-reactive), hydrophobic and has one of the lowest friction coefficients of any known substance.
