The first choice for any fastener with open access. Force is exerted perpendicular to the head (unless you are using a spanner with a crank or offset) and they are available with extra long handles. We do not recommend you hitting them with a standard hammer or putting a tube over them to give a longer lever as you may break the spanner and injure yourself or, more likely, shear the shaft of the fastener.
